Ministry of Industry and Trade has just launched two energy-saving building and energy management competitions in industry and buildings. This is part of a community-based energy advocacy program.
To participate in the competition, the building owners can register one of the five categories: a new and existing building; tropical houses; renovated houses, offices; and special nominated buildings. The consulting units will free the construction of the exam documents; solutions to help the building use energy economically and efficiently, bring economic and environmental benefits, increase competitiveness.
Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology , Secretary of the Steering Committee of the National Target Program for Energy Efficiency, Mr. Phuong Hoang Kim said that industry and buildings are accounting for over 50% of total energy consumption. Meanwhile, the potential for energy saving in this area can still reach 20-35%.
RMIT International University in Ho Chi Minh City, won the first prize of a new type of building that successfully applied energy-saving solutions in 2010. Features of this building are many natural ventilation windows. According to Mr. Kim, energy saving and efficient use in buildings and industry not only bring economic benefits for businesses but also reduce energy consumption for society. He expects these two competitions will contribute to replicating typical energy saving solutions for the learning community to follow.
Last year, the competition attracted nearly 100 industrial enterprises and buildings across the country. The organizers have selected 60 units to judge, there are 354 typical energy saving solutions implemented with the amount of energy saved into money reaching nearly 50 billion VND, reducing emissions of 21,000 tons of CO2 in a year .

In parallel with the energy-saving competition contest of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction is cooperating with German experts to study ' Handbook for design of energy efficient housing construction '. It is expected that this manual will be released at the end of 2011 to encourage the type of housing to adapt to climate change and save energy.
Accordingly, the handbook suggests technical and construction solutions such as design principles of the overall, cubic and surface of the work; organizing space inside the building; how to ventilate and cool; flood control and water resource management, reducing damage caused by natural disasters .
