Drunk, fish also increase blood dose

Researchers gave zebrafish to ethanol tanks, diluted at concentrations of 0%, 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%. Then they drop them into the normal water tank and watch the drunken group's reaction to the awake group.

Professor Maurizio Porfiri, head of the research project, said similar effects on people and alcohol make zebrafish more excited, they appear less fearful and hesitant in their actions. The drunk fish is also bold, swim faster than usual and become the leading fish.

Another characteristic similar to humans is that the "alcohol " of zebrafish has a certain limit. Those that swim in 1% ethanol solution get drunk, so leadership skills are not obvious. They lag behind normal humans and swim quite unsteadily.

According to Independent, zebrafish has many similarities with humans about development, behavior and genetics. Another previous study showed that zebrafish eggs affected by alcohol caused the fry born to tend to alienate the community. This study aims to contribute to understanding the influence of mother's drinking on the belly.

The New York University team said it is not yet possible to confirm whether zebrafish undergoes consequences after intoxication, because they " returned completely normal one day later."
