The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said the ring was found during a joint excavation by IAA and Tel Aviv University (Israel) at Jerusalem Wall National Park. It was "set with a red gemstone, apparently a garnet".
Tehiya Gangate - a member of the excavation team at the City of David - recalled: " I was sifting the soil through the screen and suddenly saw something sparkling. Then I shouted: A ring, a ring! So , everyone was extremely excited and immediately came to watch."

She said the discovery was emotional because it was not something archaeologists usually find. For a long time, Tehiya Gangate has always wanted to find gold jewelry . Finally, now the dream has come true, exactly one week before her maternity leave.
Dr. Yiftah Shalev and Riki Zalut Har-Tov, head of the IAA's excavation department, said: "The ring is very small. This ring fits on a woman's pinky finger, or a child's finger."
Professor Yuval Gadot of Tel Aviv University (Israel) and excavator Efrat Bocher added that in addition to the gold ring, the team of experts also found earrings shaped like animals with horns and decorative gold beads.
The group of experts said the discovered artifacts help people today imagine life in the famous City of David and Jerusalem thousands of years ago. The City of David is located in the southeast corner of Jerusalem, described by the group as a place with relatively few resources. Therefore, the discovery of gold showed that this city had an important position in trade at that time.

In addition, from excavation data, scientists discovered that civil and public buildings here were designed to extend from the top of the hill to the west. The city's residents were open to Greek style and influences popular in the eastern Mediterranean basin.
Besides, gold jewelry has been famous since the reign of Alexander the Great. Alexander the Great's conquests contributed to the spread and transport of luxury goods and gold jewelry.
The IAA said this 2,300-year-old ring will be displayed to the public in early June in Israel.
