Currently, battery manufacturers are focusing on rechargeable batteries for smart grid. Hitachi estimates that the market for lithium batteries used in the industry by 2020 may reach 3.00 billion yen, about 31.8 million.

The new product, developed by Hitachi and Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery, is a low-cost manganese (Mn) plate replacement, replacing the rare Coban (Co).

In addition, the new battery adds metal additives, which make the battery last longer than the current lithium-ion batteries.

Hitachi expects to complete this new type of battery in 2010, hoping to bring the new technology to use in automotive and automotive applications.
