But recently, researchers have found a way to allow driving a message without affecting the vehicle control. This is a combination of HUD display technology and traditional keypad to minimize the risk of accidents.

Researchers at Aalto University and Jyvaskyla are the authors of new text entry techniques. The driver still kept his eyes facing forward to observe the road, at the same time seeing the characters he typed, much more handy than having to stare at the touch screen.

Researchers use simulated environments

According to experts, the new technology reduces 70% of cases of drivers driving off the road due to phone calls. The test is based on a driving simulation model in a virtual environment. The driver will experience the feeling of driving in urban areas and rural areas, and try texting in a new way.

"Our research stems from the need to reduce the risk of smartphone use while driving. Although it may cause an accident, even the law has banned, but the status of texting when traveling. "We are trying to make a solution to help drivers control vehicles without distractions," said Professor Antti Oulasvirta from Aalto University.

Experiment using traditional keyboards that are familiar to everyone.

"In our tests, we used an image projector on the car windshield. The key is to determine where the text is displayed so that it doesn't obscure the driver's vision but is still enough to they saw the text clearly while texting, " Oulasvirta said.

The idea is quite simple but effective and affordable. The research team used T9 type keyboard with 12 buttons costing several tens of euros mounted in the steering wheel, accompanied by HUD display technology (displayed on the car windshield) popular in cars.
"The advantage of the T9 keyboard is very familiar to users since the time of Nokia phones, so it's easy to compose messages. Everyone doesn't need to focus too much on the same keyboard as on the touch screen ."

The results are quite positive, but are currently limited to virtual simulation environments. In order to produce a complete product, the researchers also have to do more tests, especially for those who have not once used the T9 keyboard. The driver's eye if not too much distraction will observe the road better, minimize the risk of accidents.
