When watching science fiction films about Superman, we have heard of kryptonite , an imaginary substance capable of depriving Superman of its power. On April 25, 2007, the Museum of Natural History of London announced that it had discovered in Serbia a new ore with a composition similar to kryptonite .

An ore sample was delivered to Chris Stanley, a specialist at the London Natural History Museum, by Rio Tinto PLC for analysis.

"At the end of the research phase, I used the chemical formula of the ore sample, sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxyde, to search the web and I was surprised to discover that in the movie Superman (Superman Returns), which is also the science of kryptonite - a stone Lex Luthor stole in a museum. "

The ore is white, in dusty and non-radioactive form, in contrast to the blue crystals described in the film. It will be officially named Jaradite when it is introduced in the European Mineralogy magazine.

According to the London Natural History Museum, each year 30 to 40 new types of ore are discovered, usually in the form of small particles visible only by microscope.
