Currently, the average life expectancy of Vietnamese people has reached 71.3. This figure is nearly twice as high as in 1945, when Vietnamese people lived an average of only 38 years.

According to the Ministry of Health, with the average life expectancy at present, Vietnam has reached the millennium goal soon (raising life expectancy to 71 in 2010). Compared to 1998, the average life expectancy of Vietnamese people has increased over 6 years. The relatively rapid development of medical technology and services is an important factor in this.

However, compared to other countries in the region, the life expectancy of Vietnamese people is still quite "modest", which is only close to the level that Malaysian and Thai people achieved 2 years ago (72 years old). Also since 2003, Brunei has lived an average of 76 years, Singaporeans have spent 77 years.

If compared with the Japanese "champion" , Vietnam is not even considered to be long-lived. Since 2001, women in this country have an average life expectancy of approximately 85, while men are 78 years.
