People living in Hampton Bay, New York, USA on November 14 found thousands of dead fish covering the Shinnecock channel . The stench is unpleasant to cover the surrounding area, according to the Washington Post.

"Fish corpses cover the channel face like you can walk on it," a local man answered News12.

This is a phenomenon of mass mortality of fish , which occurs when the concentration of fish is too high in low oxygen waters . Under normal conditions, the fish absorbs dissolved oxygen in the water by seeping through the gills. When dissolved oxygen is not enough, they suffocate and die.

According to the New York Department of Environmental Protection, the closure of the Shinnecock canal on November 14 accidentally caused a large population of Atlantic sardines to be trapped here. Fish that normally live in this saltwater environment may be chased by other predators to the canal.

"Unfortunately, the gate of the canal is closed so the fish cannot escape. The number of fish stuck here is too large, they absorb all the oxygen in the water and eventually die of suffocation", Chris Paparo, woman Responsible for the lab at the Ocean Science Center, Stony Brook University, USA, explained.

This is not the first time the mass death phenomenon occurred in Shinnecock channel. Some previous dead fish occurred because algae bloomed, covered the surface of the water and absorbed the oxygen, causing the fish to suffocate. In addition, factors such as high temperatures, poor flow of water or many other chemicals dissolved in water can also cause the dissolved oxygen in the water to drop.
