As usual on every Tuesday of the second week, Microsoft released the security bulletin for the month. The August 2006 security bulletin ( ms06-aug ) has 12 patches for serious vulnerabilities in Office and PowerPoint packages.
Also according to Microsoft's warning, these serious vulnerabilities could allow hackers to control the user's computer system. This month's security bulletin has 6 patches for "critical" (3) critical vulnerabilities for Windows "important" vulnerabilities.
Last month, Microsoft issued 12 patches for Office, but soon Symantec discovered that hackers could still exploit a vulnerability in PowerPoint by sending an e-mail with a file attached to the format. The malware used in this attack will install a Trojan program called Backdoor.Bifrose.E on the computer of any user opening the above attachment.
The August 2006 security bulletin fixes a wide range of vulnerabilities, from Internet Explorer, Windows, to Help and Server services. In addition, components such as Outlook Express, Microsoft Management Console, Visual Basic, and Windows DNS (Domain Name System) are also severely affected.
