NASA's Opportunity space probe sets a new record

The NASA's Space Opportunity probe (NASA) has officially set a new record of the distance traveled on the surface of an extraterrestrial planet.

NASA said that since landing on Mars in 2005 so far, this solar-powered self-propelled engine has traveled a total of 40km on Mars's surface, surpassing the previous record of the surface probe. Soviet Lunokhod 2 moon.

According to NASA figures, the Lunokhod 2 landed on the Moon on January 15, 1973 and traveled 39 kilometers on a journey of nearly five months.

NASA Director of Mars Exploration Project, John Callas, affirmed that Opportunity has conquered longer distances than any man-made self-propelled device ever. This achievement is even more significant when Opportunity is only designed to travel about 1km and has not been improved for long-distance travel.

Opportunity and "twin brothers" are Spirit probes that are put on Mars to learn about the environment on the planet and find that there is enough moisture on Mars to grow life. Spirit has now ceased operations, while Opportunity continues its research mission at the crater Endeavor.
