For the first time, Vietnam can design, supervise and direct the construction of a complex engineering project without the help of a foreign expert. That is the Ngang Pass tunnel project that applies new technology of the authors group of Transportation Design Consultancy Corporation.

The new technology solution of the group of authors led by engineer Ngo Xuan Thinh won the second prize in the Vietnam Science Innovation Contest 2005 (VIFOTEC). That is the result of a technology transfer program at the Hai Van road tunnel construction project, in which Vietnam is a joint venture with Nippon Koei of Japan and Louis Berger International of America.
Road section through Ngang Pass is about 7 km long on National Highway 1A in the territory of 2 provinces of Ha Tinh and Quang Binh. The total length of the new section is 2.8 km, of which the road tunnel is 495 m long. Particularly the tunnel section has applied the design and construction solution according to Austria's new technology method, abbreviated as NATM.
Mr. Ngo Xuan Thinh, chairman of the project, said that Vietnam is the first country among developing countries to boldly apply NATM tunneling technology to construction of traffic tunnel works. Domestic engineers and road workers have designed, supervised and directed the construction of a project using new technology with complex technology without the help of a specialist. The total amount of money saved by experts hire is about VND 21 billion.
In the process of design research and construction supervision, engineers have successfully solved the project's economic-technical problem, which takes advantage of many domestic materials and makes its own devices. such as deformation metering mirror, supporting shaft structure system, anchor system . replacing imported materials while ensuring the same quality.

The construction process took 16 months and was completed in August 2004. After more than 1 year of use, the vehicle traffic through the tunnel reached above the expected level. The work put into use has contributed to solving difficulties in tracing traffic on the North - South journey, shortening the distance of 4.5 km, reducing operating costs and limiting traffic accidents on Pass road. Moving forward, the research team will apply new technology to build a tunnel in Thanh Hoa or a railway tunnel in Thai Nguyen.
Mr. Thie said that the project of building a complete Ngang Pass tunnel has opened up a prospect that Vietnam can design and build many road, rail and highway tunnels, with image standards. High school in the coming years. This is also a milestone to show that Vietnam has reached regional level in the field of road and bridge construction.
