The Russian government will operate a number of floating nuclear power plants over the next three years to power remote areas.

In fact, Russia's floating nuclear power plant will be on a special type of ship. In addition to electricity, ships provide clean water and heat to areas where vehicles cannot reach.

The director of the Baltic shipyard, the largest shipbuilding facility in Russia, announced that the plant's experts are building a ship carrying nuclear power plants. It will appear in the 6th International Maritime Exhibition in St Petersburg in 2016. Akademik Lomonosov will be the name of the first version of this class, Russia Today reported.

Akademik Lomonosov 's mission is to provide electricity and water to port cities, oil rigs and offshore gas exploitation. It owns two KLT-40 nuclear reactors that Russian icebreakers are using. Each KLT-40 can produce 70MW of electricity - enough to serve the needs of 200,000 people - and 70MW of heat.

With a volume of 21,500 tons, Akademik Lomonosov brought along a crew of 69 people. It has no propulsion system so people will have to drag it to the places they want.

15 countries, including China, Argentina and Indonesia, have expressed interest in Russia's floating nuclear power plant.
