Professor Jose Manuel Fernandez-Real and his colleagues conducted a random selection of 127 male subjects with an average age of 55-80 years in about 2 years. They do not suffer from cardiovascular disease, but have type 2 diabetes or hypertension, dyslipidemia, overweight or family history of people with heart disease. All were divided into three groups with the Mediterranean diet but Group 1 consumed at least 50ml of olive oil a day, group 2 consumed 30gr of walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts. The other group has a low-fat diet from plants and animals.

The results showed that those who increased consumption of olive oil, osteocalcin concentration, a bone composition, along with bone formation index (P1NP) and beta cell function were also increased significantly while the two groups remained there is no sign of change. In addition, experts found that the rate of calcium in serum in people in group 1 did not change while the rate decreased significantly in the other two groups.
