That was the conclusion of experts from Yale University School of Medicine (USA) after 1 month of monitoring the health of 37 patients in the hospital. They found that those who developed pneumonia experienced a period in which the bacterial composition of the mouth changed dramatically. Therefore, the change in the bacteria in the mouth is thought to be an early sign of disease.

Bacterial pneumonia usually results from the inhalation of tiny bubbles of bacteria that enter the lungs. Meanwhile, many studies have shown people are more likely to die from pneumonia if more pores are ingrained into the gums, which are thought to accumulate many pathogenic bacteria.

'Our findings can help people improve pneumonia prevention measures related to the amount of bacteria in their mouths,' said Dr. Samit Joshi, team leader, at Hiep's annual conference. American infectious disease association. According to Nigel Carter, Executive Director of the UK Oral Health Foundation, the results support their studies that good oral care helps to improve your overall health.
