Chinese Daily newspaper quoted Chinese scientists as saying that pumpkin extract could help replace or reduce daily insulin injections in patients with type 1 diabetes.

The team discovered a pumpkin compound that helps repair damaged insulin-producing cells in diabetic mice, thereby improving blood insulin levels.

The experiment showed that in diabetic rats given pumpkin extracts, blood insulin levels and insulin-producing cells were only 5% and 8% lower than healthy mice, respectively. Overall, mice fed pumpkin extracts had a 36% increase in blood insulin levels compared to untreated mice.
