Russian scientists claim that they found shards of meteorite in the area of Lake Chebakul, Ural, Russia.
A member of the meteorite committee of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Victor Grikhovski, from Ural Federal University, said Russian scientists have found a broken piece of meteorite, falling in Lake Chebakul, Russia.
According to the Russian Ministry of Interior in the Chelyabin region, 7 pieces of meteorite masses were created when meteors exploded in the sky, flying in different directions. One of those fragments fell into the Chebakul Lake area, creating a deep hole of nearly 8m in diameter. Around that deep hole, small, hard, black pieces were collected. The Russian side has limited people to the incident area. An expedition consisting of members from Ural University was sent here, tasked with finding these meteorite fragments.
Meteorite pieces found in Lake Chebakul region.
'We have just completed our search and confirmed that the pieces of material found by the expedition at the Chebakul Lake area are fragments from the meteorite. These meteorite rocks, mostly Chondrite formations (rocks made up mainly of silicate mineral mixture). We analyzed the mineral fragments: iron, olivine (magnesium silicate and iron mixture), sulfite ' , Grikhovski said.
These broken pieces of meteorite are named Chebakul meteorites. Scientists also need to conduct many more experiments to confirm whether this is a new meteorite.
The meteorite fell into panic, causing people in Tumenski, Kurganski, Sverdlovski and northern Kazakhstan. The most heavily affected area is the Chelyabinski region. More than 1,000 people were injured, of which 52 were hospitalized. Meteorite rain destroyed the glass doors of 4,715 thousand houses, including 3,724 thousand houses.
The meteorite hunters have priced a meteorite about 1 million rubles.
