Scorpion: The talented architect in the desert

Under the leadership of Dr. Amanda Adams, of the University of Ben-Gurion (Israel), the team of scientists studied the cave of the large claw scorpion with the scientific name Scorpio Maurus palmatus in the Negev desert, Israel.

After catching scorpions, scientists use molten aluminum to enter the cave, after the cold aluminum mold will be taken out. Next is the process of analyzing cave structures using 3D laser scanners and computer software.

As a result, Scorpio Maurus palmatus cave is very complex, not just the small holes that we see on the ground. Accordingly, each cave begins with a vertical entrance, leading to a flat area several centimeters deep below the ground.

The cave structure is divided into separate parts, including warm rooms and cool rooms. At night, before going out of the cave to hunt under the desert cold, scorpions enter the warm room to increase body temperature. During the day, scorpions will creep into the wet room deep underground to avoid the heat.

Science Daily quoted Dr Adams as saying that it is possible to apply scorpion cave creation techniques to human construction works to cope with the ongoing climate change.
