These findings, published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health, stem from a French study of 1,428 children.

Researchers track the emotional development of children from birth to age eight, using the answers to a questionnaire, completed by parents when children are three, five and a half, and eight years old. .

The questionnaire consists of 25 sections, focusing on behavioral and emotional issues, including friendship difficulties, unintentional hyperactivity or actions, behavior, and social skills.

Parents were also asked about the types of child care of their own children since they were four, eight, 12 months old, and asked repeatedly when they were two or three years old: the formal type - going to kindergarten, center. day care, child care professionals; unorthodox types - children are looked after by family or friends; or by another child.

Only less than half of children - 44.5 percent - were cared for by another child; nearly a quarter of the participants are cared for by the formal type; while almost a third were taken care of by family or friends.

Overall, 15.5% of those children often cause problems; just over 15% are hyperactivity or low attention; 16% have emotional problems; only under 7% found it difficult to make friends with friends, while only 13% had poor social skills.
