This is the result of a process of hybrid research that persisted for about eight years (from 2005 to present) through two stages.

Phase I (2005 - 2008), through the method of hybridization from four lines of dragon fruit and dragon fruit is white flesh dragon fruit in Binh Thuan province, white flesh dragon fruit in Cho Gao (Tien Giang), Long Dinh red flesh dragon fruit 1 (LD1), H10 dragon fruit line. After that, evaluate the effect of each hybrid line and select the promising color lines, pink or purple flesh.

Phase II (from 2009 to present), launched a trial of hybrid lines of dragon fruit to select hybrids with outstanding advantages that can be propagated to serve the economic program of the southern provinces and cities.

In order to confirm the advantages of the newly bred purple dragon fruit variety, scientists from the Southern Institute of Fruit Plants (SOFRI) conducted a test of distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS), the price. cultivation and use (VCU), in which the Southern Fruit Tree Institute has planted a VCU trial at three locations in the localities, namely Tien Giang, Long An, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, with very good results.

In Tien Giang, after 16 months of planting, the purple-pink dragon fruit seed has a yield of 14.54 kg / head (main crop), in Long An, reaching the productivity of 11.61 kg / cylinder and in Ba Ria - Vung Tau, reaching productivity 4.89kg / cylinder.

Remarkably, the purple-fleshed dragon fruit has the ability to spread fruits throughout the year with the outstanding advantages that scientists have recognized through growing trials are strong growth, big branches, eggs or eggs oblong, beautiful shell, green fruit ears, purple and pink flesh is very eye-catching, delicious fruit quality . In particular, new purple-pink dragon fruit varieties have been bred to a small to moderate level, so it is very convenient. for the production of.

According to Associate Professor - Dr. Nguyen Minh Chau, the purple-fleshed dragon fruit variety was officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and granted a certificate of exclusive protection by the Department of Crop Production.

Previously, through scientific research and breeding, scientists of the Institute have successfully bred red flesh dragon fruit (LD1 symbol) which is widely grown in many localities such as Tien Giang. , Long An, Binh Thuan . bring great economic efficiency for farmers.

Currently, the Southern Fruit Tree Institute is also preserving 20 dragon fruit varieties from domestic sources and imported from foreign countries with 40 hybrid dragon fruit varieties, serving research, gene conservation, breeding selection. .
