Since the end of May, Japanese Ministry of Agriculture - Forestry - Fisheries has used fields in six areas of Fukushima Prefecture to experimentally test measures to remove radioactive substances in the soil.

According to experimental results, sunflowers can only absorb 0.2% of the radioactive material in the soil.

The ministry said it was impossible to use sunflowers to remove radioactive material in the soil and no other plant could absorb a large amount of radioactive material.

About 95% of the radioactive material remains in the range from the ground to a depth of 2.5cm, while the mature sunflower roots penetrate deep into the ground to more than 1m.

The most effective way to remove radioactive material in the soil is to remove the soil from the surface. According to experimental results, if removing 3cm thick soil layer in areas with short roots, it will remove up to 97% of radioactive material.

If removing 4cm of soil in normal areas, 74% of this radioactive material will be reduced.

In the case of using a chemical that hardens the soil layer above and removes the soil layer, 82% of the radioactive material in the soil will be reduced.
