Super moon can create 'king tide' flooding coastal areas

The close distance between the Moon and the Earth causes the "king tide" to threaten many coastal areas.

During the super moon, authorities in coastal areas must closely monitor sea levels to prevent flood risks, according to Christian Science Monitor. " The tide is usually stronger at the beginning of the new moon or the full moon. At these phases, the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned. The influence of the Sun and Moon on the Earth's ocean is in the same direction. The distance between the Moon and the Earth also has a great impact on the tide, in general, the tide is much higher during the super moon period and the flooding situation is more likely to occur , " said Robert Boyle, assistant professor of geography. In the US coastal area, "king tide" occurs once or twice a year, flooding low-lying areas. As sea levels rise, flooding will occur more frequently and "king tide" becomes a more serious problem.

" It all depends on location, " said Stephen Strader, professor of environmental geography at Villanov University, Philadelphia. "For example, places near the ocean are more susceptible to flooding due to high tide."

Super moon occurs due to the Moon's elliptical orbit. When the Moon is aligned with the Earth and the Sun at the closest point to the Earth (near the point), it is 14% larger and 30% brighter than the normal full moon. Super moon at the near-point will only reappear after 18 years.
