On October 26, Associate Professor-Dr. Cao Ngoc Thanh, Vice Rector of Hue Medical University, said that after 20 days of opening, the Center for Gamma Knife Surgery (Hue University of Medicine) at the school hospital. saved 20 patients, including Cambodians.

All patients suffered from serious diseases such as brain tumors, cerebrovascular malformations, and cured many places but not cured.

Each surgery using this technique, the Southeast Asian countries cost about 100 million VND, while at Hue University Hospital, only 25 million VND.

Gamma knife surgery is a new technique, able to accurately determine the location of injury in the patient thanks to the 3-dimensional navigation system. Gamma radiation energy is focused on predetermined focal points to destroy all lesions, such as brain tumors, cerebrovascular malformations, pituitary tumors . only once, but Do not harm healthy tissue around.

The accuracy of radiation can treat very small, deep or dangerous positions, which cannot be operated by conventional methods. By a fully automated system, Gamma will program individual treatment for each patient. First of all, the machine determines the coordinates of the vulnerability with the positioning frame. The patient then received a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan with a positioning frame. MRI images will be transferred to the surgical programming system. Treatment planning machine based on MRI images and coordinates of lesions.

Gamma knife surgery does not require anesthesia. Aesthetically, patients do not have to shave their hair and have no scars, which is an advantage over open surgery. After surgery, the patient is still awake, eating normally, can be discharged within 1-2 days.
