Beta blockers reduce the risk of death of cardiovascular patients after surgery

Researchers at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in the United States found that if given cardiovascular patients taking beta blockers during surgery, there would be a significant reduction in the risk of death after surgery compared to heart patients. The circuit does not use this medicine.

' We have reduced the risk of death after surgery in the short and long-term by about 35% by administering the cardiopulmonary blockers during surgery. We did that with the cost of surgery increasing by about $ 1 per patient , 'said Arthur W. Wallace, an anesthesiologist professor at The University of California, San Francisco, USA. He is also an anesthesiologist for the largest research program at The National VA system, USA (SFVAMC program), with more than 200 research scientists, all of whom are lecturers at UCSF.

Beta blockers work to reduce cardiovascular risk because it works to prevent the effects of stress hormones , thereby reducing the risk of chest pain or ischemic heart disease (reduced flow blood supply to the heart) may occur when the heart beats fast but does not receive adequate blood flow.

The analytical results of more than 38,779 surgeries performed under the SFVAMC medical research program in the period of 1996-2008 showed that patients with heart disease had used Beta blockers before surgery and had at least one postoperative doses as well as patients who only use a single dose of beta blockers after surgery have significantly lower mortality rates after surgery than patients without Beta blockers.

Arthur W. Wallace and colleagues developed and implemented the Beta blockers at SFVAMC in 1998 and helped introduce the use of Beta blockers to general surgical practice in the United States.
