The powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the city of Ercis in southeastern Turkey on October 23. The number of people confirmed killed in this disaster has increased to 523.

So far, 185 people have been saved, but hundreds are still missing. More than 1,600 people were injured in the earthquake.

Cold weather with rain and snow has hindered rescue efforts.

Rescue workers at some places continued to dig through the rubble to search for missing people, but in other places they stopped the rescue and turned to help survivors.

Southeast Turkey was shaken by a strong 5.2-magnitude aftershock, but there have been no reports of casualties due to this aftershock.

The Turkish government initially said it did not receive any outside help, but later changed its mind.

Israel helped clothes, blankets and other supplies. Aid from several other countries is also beginning to arrive in Turkey.

The United Nations says it is sending thousands of tents, blankets and cushions to help survivors who live in the cold.
