After the loud explosion, people in Vinh Loc district (Thanh Hoa) felt the earth shake and people wobble. The earthquake reporting center and tsunami warning noted that the area was hit by a 3.5-magnitude earthquake.
Ms. Khuc Thi Minh, Head of the Department of Natural Resources in Vinh Loc district, said the earthquake occurred at 6:20 am."After the big bang, Vinh Loc town and many nearby communes shook slightly, many people felt the vibration," Minh said.
According to the Head of Minh's Department, the local authorities have not reported damage to people and property this afternoon. People were surprised that Vinh Loc was a plain, never had an earthquake. Often vibrations occur only in the mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa, like Quan Son.
Talking to PV, Mr. Le Huy Minh, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geophysics said, the earthquake occurred on the Son La fault zone (extending from Son La to Thanh Hoa). Because the epicenter was not deep, the gas in the ground escaped along the fault zone to create an explosion.
According to Mr. Minh, in addition to the Son La fault, Thanh Hoa is also located on the major fault zone is Ma River, so it often suffers from earthquakes. However, the magnitude of earthquakes in Thanh Hoa is often much smaller than that of the break-up place of Dien Bien and Son La provinces. The strongest earthquake recorded in these two fault zones is 6.8 Richter, in 1983.
Earlier on November 3, Cao Bang province saw a magnitude 3.6 earthquake.
