The chip design company Azul Systems has announced that it has successfully designed a new generation 64-bit Vega 2 chip with up to 48 processing cores contained on the same silicon circuit board. So this is one of the most core single chips in the world today.

Azul Systems, now a subsidiary of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), said the 64-bit Vega 2 processor was built using 90 nanometer chip technology, with 48 processing cores placed on the same board, containing up to 812 million transistor transistors, doubling the number of processing cores on the same silicon circuit compared to the previous 24-core Vega 1 chips.

With this 64-bit Vega 2 processor chip, Azul System can create its own symmetric multi-processor supercomputers that are integrated with 768 48-core processors, with 768 GB of memory. Azul's current supercomputing line is equipped with a processor chip system that includes 384 24-core processors with 256 GB of memory.

Azul Systems said it will officially sell this 48-core Vega 2 chip around early 2007.
