A unique surgery has just taken place in the US and the baby was born with a brain outside the skull miraculously survived.
The condition of a baby named Lucas is considered very rare, usually death more than a day after birth.
Dr. Tim Vogel and Dr. Hooman Azmi are the two doctors who successfully performed a complicated procedure on an exencephaly newborn baby.
Lucas was diagnosed with exencephaly.
In the first ten weeks of pregnancy in the womb, Lucas was diagnosed with exencephaly with a manifestation of the skull not forming properly and exposing the brain to the mother's uterine environment.
This exposure caused serious physical and mental effects on Lucas. If found, doctors often advise mothers to have an abortion. Even when the baby is pregnant until the time of delivery and is forced to hold back, most will not survive one day.
However, Maria Santa Maria, Lucas's mother, decided not to have an abortion and said she was mentally prepared no matter what.
To handle Lucas's rare situation, doctors removed half of the baby's basal ganglia, the part of the brain responsible for controlling improperly formed movements. Doctors closed the skin around Lucas's exposed brain tissue. As the skull bone grows, they will scrape off small layers to fill the depressions.
Miraculously, after successful surgery, Lucas was able to leave the hospital and go home without mechanical ventilation.
Currently, Lucas is seven months old and miraculously has passed the death gate. However, doctors are not sure how long Lucas will live because most babies diagnosed with exencephaly die prematurely.
