'When the first bellow of the cow sounded, our cowboy thought a pregnant cow gave birth. But on the grass, most cows are lying on the ground. Some have died and others have seized. Within hours, 15 of my 18 cows were dead, ' Abel said.

Initial test results show that cows die from cyanide infection - an extremely toxic chemical - that the grass secretes.

'I grow Tifton 85, a high-protein grass. It is a very good grass for cattle , "Abel said.

Some farmers in Bastrop County also discovered Tifton 85 grass in their farms releasing cyanide gas. But none of their cows died.

Scientists from the US Department of Agriculture decided to analyze the genes of Tifton 85 to see if they have any genetic mutations.

Dr. Gary Warner, a veterinarian in Elgin City, said Tifton 85 suddenly released cyanide poison for a number of reasons. The drought in the past two years in Texas may be one of those reasons.

While waiting for the results of the scientists' investigation, Abel will not let the cows go to the grass.'Now grasshoppers are enjoying that grass,' he said.
