The incident happened off the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwell.(Illustration).

At that time - the pinnacle of the Cold War - some British naval divers were assigned secret missions off the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwell.

Locals suspect the navy is testing many types of explosives secretly.

One day before the tragedy, naval lieutenant Joseph Brooks said he saw a shark approaching him. Brooks, who has experience in sharks, sees sharks begin to swim towards an underwater diver. Brooks fears it will attack him.

However, the shark swam away after seeing the diver's bubble exhale.

The next day, when Brooks got on a boat with three other divers, he saw another shark circling their boat.

Worried about the incident that happened yesterday, Brooks feels anxious and decides to try to chase or kill the shark.

Brooks, along with L Spicer divers, Leslie Nye and Richard Kirby, armed with two explosives and prepared to attach it to the shark.

They tied the explosives to the rope. With a skillful throw, they managed to wrap the rope around the shark's fin.

After that, Brooks and his teammates began to sail to the shore, away from the sharks. However, the shark chased them and exploded when swimming under the boat.

All four were blown into the water after the double explosion. Nye and Kirby were killed while Brooks and Spice were seriously injured.

A resident named Ronald Curnow once spoke of the tragedy with West Briton.

'I am going to school and we have never heard of such an explosion. It was so big that we all ran out of class and down to the beach , "Curnow said.

'My father was a medic and ran to the beach, but he couldn't do anything for Leslie, his acquaintance. The incident occurred during the Cold War and people suspected they (the navy) tested top secret explosives and shark stories are just stories erected ".
