The largest fossil dinosaur skeleton discovered

Japanese researchers said they had excavated the mountains of Hokkaido fossilized the complete skeleton of an 8m long Hadrosaurid dinosaur, once inhabiting the earth about 72 million years ago.

This fossil skeleton was found in a geologic layer dating from the Upper Cretaceous period, when the area was submerged in deep sea water from 80-200m.

Excavation work began in 2013, after local fossil collector Yoshiyuki Horita found a fossilized tail bone in 2003. More than 1,000 pieces of fossil bones were finally excavated.

About 190 fossil fragments were identified as belonging to the dinosaur skeleton that was displayed to the media in a building in the town.

Scientists say the Hadrosaurid dinosaurs are herbivores and are more likely to have lived near the coast.

'These fossils are also very valuable globally. We hope to discover which habitat of dinosaurs once existed along this coast, ' said Yoshitsugu Kobayashi, associate professor at Hokkaido University Museum and a member of the research team.

Mr. Horita, 67, shared with reporters: 'I will be very happy if the kids and dinosaur lovers come here and restore our town.'
