The machine, built by Ohio State University experts in partnership with the Battelle Memorial (USA), could connect Ian Burkhart's brain to muscles, bypass the injured spine, so that he could not react. .
Burkhart (23 years old, in Dublin, Ohio) is one of five members participating in the study to test the effectiveness of the Neurobridge machine . He had quadruple paralysis when he had an accident while he was diving 4 years ago.
'It is very similar to a roundabout case of heart surgery, but instead of redirecting blood, we actually changed the direction of electronic signaling , ' CBS News quoted team leader Chad Bouton.
Neurobridge operates with the help of a tiny computer chip installed on the patient's cortex after a 3-hour operation.
The chip reads the brain signal and sends it to the computer to translate it into commands, thereby activating the relevant muscles to act as expected. The whole process takes place within 1/10 seconds.
