Mount Longonot is located southeast of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Africa. The mountain, 2,776m above sea level, is believed to have last erupted in 1860. Longonot contains a large crater formed by extensive stepped lava eruptions about 21,000 years ago.
Mount Longonot is protected by the Kenya Wildlife Service as part of Mount Longonot National Park. There is a 3.1km trail that runs from the park entrance up to the crater rim and continues on a 7.2km detour around the crater.
Mount Longonot is 60km northwest of Nairobi in Kenya. A nearby town is also named Longonot. The Longonot Earth Satellite Station is located on the southern side of the mountain.

The impressive feature of this area is that there is a forest of trees covering the crater floor, and small vents are found around the crater. The mountain is home to many different species of wildlife, especially plains zebra, giraffe, Thomson antelope, buffalo.
Standing at the rim of the crater, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Great Rift and Naivasha valleys. The crater is 8 x 12 km in size. This place is now a famous tourist attraction of Kenya.

Mount Longonot National Park is one of the most fascinating attractions in Kenya. The park's main attractions include extinct volcanoes and crater forests.
Many foreign tourists like to come here to climb Mount Longonot. The climb is very strenuous and you must be physically and in good health to make the climb. The whole walking path is only about 8 - 9 km long but very steep. The round trip from the park gate to the top of Longonot and back takes about 5 hours of hiking.
When passing the Longonot crater rim, visitors will enjoy the wonderful scenery of Naivasha and the Great Rift valley.
The Great Rift Valley is part of an inland ridge system that runs through Kenya from north to south. The valley contains the Cherangani Hills and a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active. It has a mild climate, with temperatures usually below 28⁰C.
The Tugen Hills to the west of Lake Baringo lie in a valley containing fossils preserved in lava flows from 4 million years ago. Relics of human ancestors have also been found here.
