When seduced by pheromones secreted by females, some male snakes will rub their chin along the female's back. This phenomenon is called "mating ball" so that many male snakes want to mate with a female snake.(Photo: New York Times).

The male snake closest to the female will mate with it, leaving a mucus inside the female body. This mucus blocks off the female reproductive tract for about two days, forcing other males to stay away.(Photo: Robert Mason & Christopher Friesen / University of Oregon).

If the female refuses to mate, it can prevent male snake sperm from fertilizing its eggs with a mysterious "contraceptive" mechanism. The female can wait for the mucus to dissipate and pair with another male snake.(Photo: New York Times).
