The Big Stone River is an average of 200m wide and 6km long along the Taganay Mountains in the southern Urals of Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. At its widest point, the river is 700m wide. The riverbed is about 6m deep and is covered with large blocks of quartz and aventurine (a form of quartz containing mica compounds that give it a shimmering effect). Each of these blocks weighs 9-10 tonnes and the rock layers here are up to 6m thick. This makes it impossible for vegetation, even lichens, to grow in this environment.

According to archaeologists, the Great Stone River was formed 10,000 years ago. Researchers believe that at that time, glaciers covered the tops of the Taganay Mountains at an altitude of up to 4,800m. Under the weight of these glaciers, the mountain tops were crushed into millions of large rocks. As the ice melted, the rocks slowly slid down, creating the Great Stone River.

However, the most surprising thing is that when approaching this river, visitors can always hear the sound of flowing water but cannot see any water.
