Mei Mei's 12-year-old mother and 14-year-old Eimei are both lent by China. Winter birth is extremely rare for pandas in captivity breeding programs. The sex of the juveniles has yet to be announced.
Large pandas are one of the rarest species in the world with about 1,590 live in nature in China, mostly in Sichuan and eastern Hsienxi. About 180 other children were born in captivity.
