The first earthquake had a rich 7.6 magnitude, occurring around 9am north of Ternate city nearly 200km. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake lies below a depth of about 93km. Immediately Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning, but then withdrew.

Japanese officials issued a warning that there could be tsunami waves of up to 50cm occurring along the northern coast of Hokkaido, and the northeast coast of Honshu Island, a large Japanese island. Officials asked people to stay away from the beaches.

National television station NHK showed the coastal area of ​​Hokkaido, however it seems that the area was not badly damaged in the earthquake. The notice said that the earthquake broke the glass doors and broke the contents of the house.

So far, Japan has withdrawn the tsunami warning.
