Two strong earthquakes shook Asia

Around 9am this morning, two powerful earthquakes shook the Moluccas Islands in northeastern Indonesia and the northern island of Hokkaido, causing officials to issue a tsunami warning.

The first earthquake had a rich 7.6 magnitude, occurring around 9am north of Ternate city nearly 200km. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake lies below a depth of about 93km. Immediately Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning, but then withdrew.

Local people on Ternate Island, about 120km south of the epicenter, said by phone that the earthquake was moderate and did not cause great fear to the people. 'I feel it's not that big. The windows and glass doors were shaken but not broken ', said Wirdayanti, an employee at the hotel in Ternate.

Suharjono, the head of the Earthquake Bureau of the meteorological agency, said they have not received any notice of damage or casualties.

A few minutes later, the second magnitude 7 earthquake happened off the coast of Hokkaido, the island is located in the far north end of Japan, and below a depth of nearly 20km.

A wave of more than 10cm hit the Hokkaido coast about 35 minutes after the earthquake.

Japanese officials issued a warning that there could be tsunami waves of up to 50cm occurring along the northern coast of Hokkaido, and the northeast coast of Honshu Island, a large Japanese island. Officials asked people to stay away from the beaches.

National television station NHK showed the coastal area of ​​Hokkaido, however it seems that the area was not badly damaged in the earthquake. The notice said that the earthquake broke the glass doors and broke the contents of the house.

So far, Japan has withdrawn the tsunami warning.
