Although progress has been made in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV / AIDS, more than 1,000 children worldwide have been infected with this deadly virus every year.
The Vietnam News Agency reporter in the United States cited data in a recent report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which stated that in 2006, there were 410,000-600,000 children under 15 years of age suffering from HIV / AIDS-related diseases. most of them are infected while they are still pregnant or newly born, and half of them will die within two years of age if they are not actively treated.
The UNICEF report also stated that only 7 countries around the world are able to achieve the goal by 2010 to deliver free medicine to 80% of HIV / AIDS infected women, namely Argentina, Brazil, Botswana, Jamaica, Russia, Thailand and Ukraine. Until now, only 9% of pregnant women infected with HIV / AIDS in low and middle-income countries were given medicine to reduce their risk of infection.
According to UNICEF, early detection and treatment is an important measure to mitigate the harmful effects of HIV / AIDS, a disease of about 2.9 million people every year.
