China built a speed bridge for 43 hours in Beijing

According to Xinhua, the Tam Nguyen Bridge in Kinh Thuan Street, Beijing City, is a lifeline bridge, linking 48 main roads together, including belt 3 and highway to the airport.

The old bridge has been in place for more than 30 years, hundreds of thousands of vehicles pass through every day, so it is badly damaged. For safety, new beams need to be replaced.

However, because this is a lifeline bridge, the repair requires careful calculations, complete in the shortest time possible. After discussing 11 options, the bridge was finally repaired on November 13.

Starting at 23h, the first thing is to remove the old girder, including 27 sections, expected to be completed in 24 hours. However, during construction, Chinese engineers found that the bridge girder was damaged more than expected, so the construction time was increased to 36 hours.

The pre-fabricated beam sections, 55m long, 45m wide, slowly slide into place thanks to the 2,000-ton pulley systems. Finally, the new girder was replaced, completed at 18:00 on November 15. Total construction time, including changing beams, and spherical plastic spreading, is 43 hours. Bridge continues to be overhauled until December 20, during this time, the Beijing Department of Transportation will guide the flow of vehicles, to ensure safety.
