A boat carrying many ecotourists is traveling on a river in Sucumbíos province, located in northeastern Ecuador.

Unexpectedly, they had to stop. It turned out that a large group of creatures was crossing the river to reach the other side.

These creatures are the white-lipped peccary pig (Scientific name: Tayassu pecari) , one of the most hunted animals in the Amazon. Furthermore, forest fires pose a serious threat to the population of this rare pig species.

These animals are endemic to the Amazon rainforest, weighing around 22 kg and measuring 1.1 m in length when fully grown. Like many other pig species, the white-lipped peccary is an omnivore, and its lifespan is approximately 13 years.

These pigs can live in large herds of 20 to 300 individuals, often crossing rivers in search of food. Peccary pigs also serve as indicators of the health of the Amazon rainforest because they live in large herds and are widely distributed throughout the forest.
