Scientists from the US National Oceanic and Meteorological Center (NOAA) say it has no fins, looks almost like shallow water octopus but lives at a depth of 4km under the sea - a record depth for eight vacuums fin.
It lacks chromatophores, so it has a bright white appearance that is different from the normal octopus, and is nicknamed "Casper" - a friendly ghost in animation.
Scientists have not yet determined exactly what species it is, but NOAA scientist Michael Vecchione said it "almost certainly is a new species" and "remarkable".
