Vietnam permanently lost the rhino one horn

One-horn rhino (Java rhino) has officially become extinct in Vietnam. This information has been confirmed by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the World Rhino Conservation Organization (IRF).

'It is sad because despite a significant investment in efforts to preserve rhino populations in Vietnam, we still cannot save this rare animal. The Javan rhinoceros is extinct, Vietnam has suddenly lost part of its natural heritage, 'said Tran Thi Minh Hien, Director of WWF Vietnam.

At the end of April 2010, the body of a Java rhino was discovered in Cat Tien National Park in the state of bullets stabbed into the legs and horn disappeared. The investigation conclusion published by WWF in January this year indicated that poaching could be the cause of the death of the rhino.

One-horn rhinoceros was thought to be extinct in Asia until a rhino individual was hunted in Cat Tien National Park area in 1988, resulting in the discovery of a small population of rhinos. Since then, many organizations have actively participated in preserving the last remaining rhino population, but failed.

Recognizing that, in Vietnam, the loss of habitat is the main reason leading to the end of one-horned rhinoceros, WWF also warned, the implementation of the law is not comprehensive and the management of the areas Poor conservation will only increase pressure on vulnerable populations.

'Recently, efforts to preserve Java rhino in Vietnam are still not strong enough to save species from extinction. If that situation continues, it is likely that more species will become extinct in Vietnam, ' said Nick Cox, WWF Species Program Manager in the Mekong Sub-region.
