Torquigener albomaculosus puffer fish lives off Japan's Amami-Ōshima island.Males create around 1.8 m wide circles to build their nests by swimming and rolling in the sand in the seabed. These circles have led scientists to headaches for the past 20 years to find their origins.Their nest can only be used once to attract females, then they will be further dug to protect the eggs.(Photo: Yoji Okata)

Archaeologists discovered fossils of a dinosaur with many exotic characteristics like birds, living about 66 million years ago. The dinosaur was named Anzu wyliei, after the name of a bird monster in ancient mythology. With a height of more than three meters, weighing 200-300 kg, this dinosaur walks on two feet and is one of the largest predators on Earth. They have long round heads, parrot-like beaks, hollow bones, thin skinny legs, sharp claws and can cover the entire body feathers. Dinosaurs lay eggs in the nest and hatch like chickens.
Three incomplete fossil bones were found at Hell Creek, where many dinosaur fossils were discovered, in North Dakota and South Dakota.(Photo: Mark A. Klingler)

Tillandsia religiosa is a plant shaped like a flower growing in the desert. They are quite popular in some parts of Mexico, but are newly named scientifically.Pineapple species live in the high 1,800 - 2,000 m above sea level.(Photo: A. Espejo)

Balanophora coralliformis are chlorophyll plants, shaped like corals and found in the Philippines. They live on parasites on other plants for nutrition.Balanophora coralliformis can be found in mossy forests of 1,460 - 1,700 m above sea level.Scientists currently only confirm about 50 individuals.(Photo: PB Pelser & JF Barcelona)

Deuteragenia ossarium assassins are only 12.7 mm in size, known for their use of other insects. The queen builds a nest on the ground with soil and pieces of trees, then localizes the nest with the bodies of dead ants.According to ecologist Michael Staab, the smell of ants can create a chemical cover for beehives. This bee's venom can be deadly.(Photo: Michael Staab)

This multicellular, asymmetrical creature with fossil-like form from prehistoric times is found at depths of 400-1,000 m in southeastern Australia.Scientists think they may have relatives with two comb jellyfish (Ctenophora) or intestinal cavities (Cnidaria - jellyfish, corals, anemones and water). This new creature poses a challenge to all existing biological classifications.(Photo: Jorgen Olesen)
