West Lake management board: 'Many dead fish may be due to weather changes'

Hanoi is taking samples of water for testing and spraying disinfectants around dead fish areas in West Lake.

The phenomenon of dead fish in West Lake (Tay Ho district, Hanoi) has been scattered for about a month and appeared in large numbers from the afternoon of July 8, concentrated in Ve Ho and Thu Sai streets.

Dead fish are mainly bighead, drifting, copying, drifting to the lake, stinking.

On the morning of July 7, local authorities mobilized nearly 100 people including the forces of environmental workers, volunteer students, militia . to take part in collecting dead fish; at the same time, organizing the taking of water samples for testing and spraying of disinfectants, prevention of epidemic spread.

Mr. Do Hung Vuong, deputy manager of West Lake, said: 'Dead fish are now about 10 tons. The initial cause of this phenomenon may be due to sudden weather changes . ' Specifically, after a prolonged heat wave, from 7/7 afternoon, it began to have thunderstorms and that sudden change could cause fish in the lake to suffocate.

Earlier in October 2016, the West Lake recorded about 200 tons of white dead fish floating on the lake. Authorities had to send more than 1,000 workers to collect fish for several days. After the incident, the entire West Lake was treated to clean up the water supply and supply oxygen to the lake.

West Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake located in the northwest of Hanoi city center. The lake has an area of ​​more than 500 hectares with a circumference of more than 17 km, which is part of the old Red River after transferring the stream.
