Estrogen levels during puberty can affect a woman's appearance by affecting bone and skin development. But makeup will cover up this effect, helping less attractive women make up for their natural shortcomings.

Psychologist group at Perception Laboratory, University of St. Andrews, photographed 59 faces of women aged 18 to 25 and analyzed their sex hormone content. They then asked 30 volunteers - 15 men and 15 women - to assess the attractiveness of each face

Both men and women assessed that women with the highest sex hormone content were the most attractive. These faces often have classic feminine characteristics, such as big eyes and lips, small noses and jaws.

However, when these women put on make-up, no relationship was found between attractiveness and estrogen levels. Researchers believe that while cosmetics can improve the face, it can hide some clues that are revealed on the face.

Research leader Miriam Law Smith said: " Women effectively advertise their fertility through the face. Makeup can improve appearance in general, but it clearly helps less attractive people to become more attractive ".

For example, eye makeup will make your eyes bigger and foundation will make your skin smoother.

" Our results can explain why global men often prefer feminine faces. In terms of evolution, they like women who are vigorously energized to have many children ."

Another study showed that the attractiveness of women also varies with the menstrual cycle - culminating in the most fertile stage.
