10 deaths due to amoeba feeding on the human brain

Human brain amoeba worm killed 10 people in Karachi, Pakistan. While the source of this brain-eating amoeba has not been clarified, the authorities warn people to use chlorinated water, especially in Muslim bath rituals.

Naegleria fowleri (human cerebral amoeba) is known as Naegleria fowler. Their presence in humans is determined by spinal cord tests. Brain-eating amoeba causes meningitis, severe brain infection and often fatal disease.

It is thought that swimming in rivers and lakes contaminated is the cause of brain feeding amoeba infection. Usually they penetrate the victim's nose. However, only one victim among the 10 victims mentioned above came to the pool. So local authorities are suspicious that Muslim bath rituals are the cause of this situation.

Deaths due to cerebral elliptic amoeba were also reported in the United States.

Authorities in Karachi have examined more than 900 samples of water around the city and found that 22% of them have not been chlorinated or the amount of chlorine in the water has not met the standards.

Mr. Saghir Ahmed, Minister of Health of Pakistan said: 'People should not panic, keep calm and take precautions'.
