Since the first case of HIV / AIDS was discovered in Vietnam in 1990, up to now, all 64 provinces and cities with 90% of districts and 50% of communes in the country have appeared HIV cases. /AIDS.

HIV / AIDS pandemic is still concentrated in high-risk groups: 55.16% of HIV-infected people are injecting drug users, 2.8% are sex workers, 1.67% are venereal patients. The rate of male infected is six times higher than female. The country has more than 100,000 people infected with HIV (about 0.25% of the population), more than 16,500 cases have turned to AIDS and 9,554 patients have died. There are nearly 20,000 women and children infected with HIV / AIDS.

UNAIDS of the United Nations said that if in 2001 the rate of HIV / AIDS infection among women and children was only 0.02%, this year this rate was 1.4%, meaning that 70 times. Especially, most of the above women are not in high risk behaviors such as prostitution and drug addiction. Most of them are infected by caring for patients at home and in treatment facilities. HIV also comes to them from their husbands and partners. However, nearly 70% of women are not eligible for treatment, many are discriminated against, life is cornered.

In fact, the treatment of these people is still very difficult. Medications are expensive compared to people's income. Limited treatment ability. According to Mr. Nguyen Huy Nga, Director of Vietnam AIDS Control, in 2005, about 6,000 HIV / AIDS patients were treated with ARV drugs, of which about 2,700 patients were treated with the State budget. Meanwhile, the number of patients in need of ARV treatment is actually about 25,000.

According to the Ministry of Health, by 2010, Vietnam has about 311,500 people infected with HIV / AIDS. Therefore, the goal of the National Strategy for HIV / AIDS Prevention and Control in Vietnam by 2010 is to: control the rate of HIV / AIDS infection in the population by less than 0.3% by 2010 and not increase after 2010.
