Korean scientists have just developed corn seeds that contain substances that have anti-cancer potential 10 times higher than conventional corn varieties.

Kangwon University's Professor Rhee Hae-ik said purple corn (photos) was produced by him and his colleagues, rich in anthocyanin, a natural pigment that can prevent cancer. Anthocyanin is found in raspberries and strawberries, its antioxidant properties can block the proliferation of cancer cells. In addition, anthocyanins also have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic properties and may improve vision.

Last month, the John Innes Center in Norwich (UK) also bred a purple, genetically modified tomato variety with high levels of anthocyanins, which could be used to help people prevent cancer. While purple tomatoes are born with genetic engineering, Korean purple is created by traditional breeding methods that are safer for health.
