Australia has established a $ 160 million fund to protect the world's forests. This is considered one of the efforts to combat illegal deforestation and global warming. The main purpose of this fund is to reduce deforestation and afforestation.
Prime Minister John Howard said the idea was more effective than signing the Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions.
The Australian Government says its global initiative on climate protection and forests will work for both developed and developing countries. This initiative aims to strengthen developing countries' ability to access forest resources and improve environmental laws and regulations for forest protection.
According to Howard, this idea will help slow deforestation in places like Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
