Scientists are developing a tiny biological sensor that can detect cancer proteins and latent viruses.
Cancer cells are dividing
This biosensor is made using the same technology as gyroscopes such as navigation systems and airbags. It will be made into a handheld device for faster and easier analysis of tissue samples. It is hoped to help doctors diagnose and control common types of cancer and offer the most appropriate treatment.
The device is disc-shaped with a diameter of only 1/10 mm , covered with special types of DNA or proteins that cause cancer-causing agents to be 'tied' to the surface. It works by identifying cancer-causing agents - proteins or other molecules produced by cancer cells.
Professor Calum McNeil, the leader of the research team, said: 'Early diagnosis and effective control of cancer are seen as the key to treating this disease, and we believe this new technique will help with this. there'.
The device can also easily be connected to information resources such as hospital computer systems, Internet or mobile phones. It can be developed to apply to other diseases, including bacterial diseases. It is also possible to apply this technique to detect biological molecules or chemical weapons, allowing applications to early warning systems against terrorist attacks.
