Children under 6 months old should not drink plenty of water

Parents should not let their unborn children drink filtered water, because too much water can put them in a dangerous state of poisoning for their health.

"Even though they are small, they still have a thirsty reaction and need to drink water. So when they are thirsty, the water they need is breast milk or powdered milk," said Jennifer Anders, a pediatrician at the Young Center Johns Hopkins in Baltimore said.

Because the child's kidneys are not fully developed, giving them too much water will cause the body to release sodium with excess water. The loss of sodium affects brain activity, causing initial symptoms of water poisoning such as irritability, lethargy and other neurological changes. More severe symptoms include hypothermia (less than 36 degrees Celsius), swelling of the face and convulsions.

Early signs are often unrecognizable and only when the child twitches will parents realize. But if children are examined in time, there will be no serious consequences.

Absolutely not let children under 6 months of using filtered water as a daily drink, Anders said. Mothers should also avoid giving children too thin milk powder or electrolyte solution. However, in some cases, it is still possible to give babies a little water to cure constipation or in hot weather, but each time should only give them about 28-56 grams.

If the parent thinks the child has been poisoned by water, or the child has a seizure, call a doctor immediately.
